The most important thing in life is how we treat each other. We are in control of how we treat each other. When an option arises to either help or hurt, we have the power to choose. Extending that notion, when confronted with difficulty and rudeness, we can be in control of how we respond to that. That's where civility can be most effective.
As the article points out, kindness is not the same thing as being soft or weak. Kindness and civility are ways of dealing with difficulty in a way that encourages understanding and brings out the best in those around us.
